Perched on a wooded hillside in the Berkshires, Water Farm is a retreat for a young family, positioned between two ponds and anchored among granite boulders. From this vantage, the house overlooks a broad valley, balancing quiet seclusion with expansive outlooks.
The home’s simple longhouse form and use of local, economical materials tie it directly to its rural, agricultural setting. A sequence of carefully framed views directs sightlines outward to water, forest, and meadow, creating shifting relationships between interior life and the surrounding landscape.
Water Farm is a study in restraint and responsiveness: a single gesture in the landscape that heightens the experience and appreciation of the natural environment.
Inside, modest volumes and warm wood finishes establish a sense of comfort in the colder months, while large sliding openings allow the house to expand in summer for meals and gatherings. The long gabled roof unifies these spaces, sheltering both private and shared zones under one continuous volume.
