Seal House
Stinson Beach, CA
Located at the base of Sugar Bowl Resort, this winter retreat accommodates small and large groups alike. Using the typical Austrian ski cabin as a reference, we designed a volume that would easily withstand and shed heavy snowfall. Three distinct facade layers give the exterior visual interest, as well as reinforce each level’s structural and programmatic purpose.
Inside, Douglas fir cladding wraps the spaces, lending a warm ambient atmosphere. A double-sided fireplace anchors the interior spaces, creating moments of connection. Integrated circulation begins from the ground floor, leading to the upper level, and eventually culminating at the hot tub deck to offer uninterrupted views of Mt. Lincoln.
On the second floor, where the facades board-and-batten pattern is wide, shared spaces enjoy open views of the surrounding flora. Meanwhile, on the top floor, a more narrow pattern creates a screen that provides privacy for the more intimate spaces while still allowing light to pass through. This variation allows the changing quality of light to register in the interior spaces, making each of them distinct and yet part of a cohesive whole.
