Cascade House

Set atop a crest overlooking Cascade Bay and the forested slopes of the San Juan Islands, this home for a young couple is shaped by the quality of its unique environment. The design employs a dramatic sequence of spaces which are animated by the immediacy of the surrounding forest and telescopic views toward the bay and mountain ridges beyond.

Overview

The building form draws from the gabled roofs and traditional homes that dot the island. Exterior materials reference the colors and textures of the pines and moss-covered rocky knolls that play across the site. In contrast to the surrounding forest, the interior was designed to be light and airy. A sunroom on the second level accommodates an indoor garden that casts light onto spaces below and acts as a defining feature on the interior of the home.
